TANJONG MALIM, 4 November 2026 \u2014 The Nanotechnology Research Centre of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), in collaboration with the Chemistry Department, has taken a step forward by organising the SULAM programme themed around nanotechnology for secondary school students. Held at SMK Kalumpang, Selangor, the programme aimed to broaden students\u2019 understanding of the importance and real-world applications of nanotechnology, bringing this cutting-edge science closer to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme saw the participation of 54 first-year Bachelor of Chemistry Education students and the coordinator of Nano Centre, Dr. Suzaliza Mustafar. A total of 12 nanotechnology application models were showcased throughout the event. Among the exhibits that captivated the students most was a demonstration on the effects of nano-based tinted film on house windows, specifically its ability to filter ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The exhibit drew considerable interest as students were able to directly measure the UV penetration rate across three different window types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nano-based tinted film is capable of regulating heat and sunlight more efficiently than conventional window film, thereby reducing reliance on air conditioning and lowering electricity bills. To make the concept more tangible, the student group constructed a small-scale house model featuring three distinct window types, a Nano-Protected Window, a Tinted Window, and a Normal Window that allowing for a direct, side-by-side comparison of each film\u2019s performance. The hands-on model enabled students to observe, with the naked eye, the visible differences between nano-based window protection, conventional tinted glass, and untreated standard windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme was designed to maximise student engagement through interactive activities. Students were guided through a gallery walk featuring various nanotechnology projects and live demonstrations, with each station highlighting a different application of nanotechnology in everyday life. This approach allowed students to interact directly with the exhibits and pose questions to the UPSI students manning each booth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the other stations that drew keen interest was the CoffeeNano Simulator, which introduced the concept of producing nano-porous carbon from coffee waste for use as a fertiliser carrier. Live plant demonstrations were on display to illustrate the effectiveness of the nano-derived fertiliser. Another highlight was the Nano Repel Spray station, which showcased nanotechnology-enhanced surface protection spray offering superior and longer-lasting defence against insects compared to conventional products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rounding off the programme was an interactive quiz session designed to assess students\u2019 understanding of nanotechnology concepts covered throughout the day. The quiz served both to stimulate critical thinking and to reinforce the knowledge gained during the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SULAM programme stands as a testament to the powerful impact of collaboration between institutions of higher learning and secondary schools in nurturing students\u2019 passion for science and technology. Through early exposure to the world of nanotechnology, students of SMK Kalumpang not only gained new knowledge but were also inspired to pursue STEM fields further. The partnership between UPSI\u2019s Nanotechnology Centre and the Chemistry Department reflects the university\u2019s proactive commitment to its social responsibility, while advancing the nation\u2019s aspiration of producing a scientifically literate and future-ready generation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
