Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor, June 20- Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Gedangsa hosted The Financial Math Challenge, an integral part of the SULAM component for UPSI’s Financial Mathematics subject. This collaborative effort between UPSI’s Department of Mathematics and SMK Gedangsa aimed to enhance financial literacy among upper secondary students through practical STEM activities.
The event commenced with an opening ceremony at 8:00 AM, led by Mrs. Suhana Saad, the school’s principal, and attended by UPSI lecturers at UPSI’s Department of Mathematics, Dr. Nurul Akmal Mohamed and Dr. Norhayati Ahmat.
Thirty-seven facilitators guided 54 students through three engaging games: Cash Clash: The Money Marathon, Shopping Spree, and Spend and Save, designed to develop financial management skills among Form 4 and Form 5 students.
“The Financial Math Challenge provides a unique platform for UPSI’s students to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, fostering critical thinking and decision-making skills,” remarked Dr. Nurul Akmal.
The hall facilitated seamless game transitions and participant engagement. An ice-breaking session energized participants before they tackled the challenging scenarios crafted by their peers and UPSI facilitators.
“The program not only enhances mathematical understanding but also equips students with essential life skills, preparing them for future financial responsibilities,” added Dr. Nurul Akmal.
The mid-morning break at 10:20 AM allowed students to refresh before continuing with the final round at 11:00 AM. The program emphasized teamwork and decision-making under pressure, vital skills for real-world financial management.
The closing ceremony, led by a student chairperson, highlighted the day’s achievements and featured speeches from Program director Muhammad Amirul Irfan Abdul Ghani and Mrs Syamsidar Sidek, the Mathematics teacher at SMK Gedangsa. Awards were presented to top-performing groups, recognizing their proficiency in applying financial concepts.
Additionally, the event incorporated elements of SULAM, focusing on leadership and protocol management. The program’s success underscored its role in bridging academic knowledge with practical skills, preparing students for future challenges beyond their academic journey.
The Financial Math Challenge received enthusiastic feedback from participants and educators alike, affirming its impact in fostering financial literacy and student engagement. Such initiatives are pivotal in equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the modern world effectively.
