KAHS, UPSI – The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a time of joy, tradition, and cultural significance for millions around the world. On college campuses, this celebration takes on a special meaning as students from diverse backgrounds come together to mark the occasion. The festive spirit of the Chinese New Year not only brings a sense of cultural richness to the campus but also serves as a powerful catalyst for strengthening student unity.

Dragon Gala: Years of Prosperity, organized by Exco of Unity and Integration, Awang Had Salleh College (KAHS) in collaboration with Majlis Anak Johor (Major), Himpunan Anak Darul Ridzuan (HADARI) and Persatuan Bahasa Cina (PBC) invigorates the celebration with some activities such as digital poster contest, movie night, Chinese New Year cultural exhibition, explorace and KAHS Community Service: Sharing The Togetherness Through CNY from 29th January 2024 until 4th February.

In the closing speech of the program, the principal of Awang Had Salleh College, Dr. Mardiana Ismail, stated that the Chinese New Year celebration held at her college level was colored with various events that enlivened the atmosphere around the college and the UPSI campus, including community service programs.

“With a program like this, it gives the multiracial community an opportunity to understand and appreciate Chinese culture. Apart from the cultural aspect, the Chinese New Year celebration also has a positive impact on fostering the value of unity among UPSI students,” he said.

According to the Program Director, Chong You Xiu, colleges are microcosms of cultural diversity, with students hailing from various ethnic backgrounds, countries, and traditions. The Chinese New Year celebration provides a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Chinese culture.

At the closing ceremony, which took place in the Ungku Omar College Hall, Dr. Mardiana Ismail also had the opportunity to present prizes to the winners of each organized competition. The ceremony was also graced with a fan dance performance, which is an iconic dance of the Chinese community in Malaysia and a singing performance by the UPSI Faculty of Music and Performing Arts.

Chinese New Year celebrations in college play a pivotal role in strengthening student unity. Through cultural diversity, collaborative planning, cultural exchange, inclusive celebrations, and fostering friendship and solidarity, this festive occasion becomes a powerful force that brings students together. Beyond the colourful decorations and traditional performances, the celebration leaves a lasting impact on the campus community, promoting a sense of unity and mutual respect among students from diverse backgrounds.
