Tanjong Malim – Fostering entrepreneurship at the university level is vital to prepare students to navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving job market. Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) goes beyond conventional teaching by integrating entrepreneurial elements into its programs to create impactful learning opportunities. A standout initiative occurred on December 18, when Bachelor of Education (Chemistry) students organised an event called SKI.ENT at UPSI, Sultan Azlan Shah Campus. This event aimed to cultivate entrepreneurial skills by encouraging students to design, produce, and market their DIY products through popular social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

Students were guided to invent creative products related to STEM, financial management, sales, and marketing. Product development took place in the chemistry laboratory, where students experienced the full research and development process to create marketable and safe products.

A total of 41 products, including those in the fields of cosmetics, agriculture, healthcare and education were exhibited at the event that caters to a variety of customers. For instance, teachers can use those DIY kits in the classroom which can provide a hands-on way to teach STEM concepts in schools, as all products align with the Standards-Based Curriculum and Assessment Document (DSKP). For parents, those kits offer an engaging activity to explore STEM concepts with their children in a fun and interactive way.

Over 10 weeks, students engage in active promotion and selling of their products to customers. They explore various methods of marketing, such as social media campaigns and leveraging word-of-mouth strategies to maximize their reach and attract buyers. This hands-on experience allows students to not only refine their selling techniques but also to analyze customer feedback and adapt their approaches accordingly.

Some students achieve significant profits through their efforts while others may break even. More importantly, students can learn invaluable lessons about market dynamics, customer preferences and the challenges of real-world business operations. This immersive experience fosters a deeper understanding of success strategies and the resilience needed to navigate challenges in sales and entrepreneurship.
This program successfully met its objectives by enhancing students’ knowledge of information and communication technology in chemistry, enabling them to apply this knowledge more critically. It also fostered entrepreneurial skills essential for their future careers.
