Tanjong Malim, January 8, 2025: The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) in collaboration with Sekolah Agama Menengah Sungai Selisik, Hulu Selangor organised the Service Learning Malaysia-University for Society (SULAM) program entitled SKICY: Crafting creativity into STEM learning located at Sultan Azlan Shah Campus, Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI), Perak.
The program was purposely conducted to nurture the interest of school students in science and further educate them to share useful information on social media ethically and obeys netiquette rules while they are conveying any kind of information in social media. This program was designed to help students integrate STEM and information and communication technology (ICT) in creating appropriate content with digitalised sensation by exposing them with video editing skills using various applications such as Canva and Capcut.
Under the guidance of Dr. Suzaliza Mustafar and Dr. Nurulsaidah Abdul Rahim, students from SKI3013 (ICT in Chemistry) course were appointed as the facilitators to carry out the programme. A total of 72 school students from Form 3 and Form 4 participated in this program. Various exciting activities crafted for this program such as soap making, video editing, creating posters and students were also taught about the cleaning mechanisms by soap. Integration of this activity provides new knowledge that can stimulate students’ interest in science since they are able to relate what they learn in the classroom with real life.

In the soap making session, involved two main ingredients which were cooking oil and potassium hydroxide. These materials are readily available and inexpensive. Students were thrilled to see the transformation of cooking oil into soap which closely resembled commercial products.

In the next session, students had been exposed to utilise editing applications as aforementioned to create educational contents in a fun and interactive way. With this initiative, students learn about digital learning on how to promote their soap using posters, creating 30 seconds short videos about the soap, later published in Instagram. It is the initial step to be a part of the entrepreneur and build their own business.

Besides these hand-on activities, the students also learned about the importance, functions and cleaning mechanism of soap through various activities prepared by the facilitators.
The closing ceremony was officiated by the Head of Chemistry Department, Dr. Mohamad Syahrizal Ahmad. Mohd Syahrizal said that the SKI.CY project is able to alleviate students’ worries in learning STEM subjects, this programme successfully nurtures the interest in learning science and constructs the science concept in a simple way by observing daily applications. Additionally, he presented the school with a learning website developed by SKI3013 students, which will serve as teaching and learning sources for Science subjects.

SKI.CY program also able to build interpersonal and intrapersonal skills among SKI3013 students since they were needed to organise, facilitate and execute this program.
This program is undoubtedly a game-changer, challenging intrusive thoughts and inspiring students to adopt a brighter lifestyle for the future. It not only enhances their academic expertise but also equips them with ICT skills to improve their overall well-being.
